SCULPTURES
When I sculpt I often start with a subject based on an idea or emotion that I want to represent through form, color and sometimes the relationship between more than one object in the piece. Once an idea and primary material have been selected i start by roughing out the form with a variety of tools, chisels and hammers. Often the wood reveals its own opinion on where the sculpture is within it and this can lead to changes while in process sometimes even completely going away from the original subject I wanted to represent. I enjoy the freedom of working with the material to shape its final destiny. Usually, if the sculpture’s subject changes drastically from what I had intended originally it still comes up in a different project down the road.
Once the sculpture has been roughed out I use multiple tools to finalize the shape, smooth the surface and prepare it for mounting on a base and for color and finishing. At this stage I am usually making small changes to better accentuate the final form and idea.
While wood continues to be the dominant material I’m currently working with I am also exploring opportunity with metals and casting. Feel free to visit back or follow on social media to monitor the progress.
